Missouri True Blue Women

Missouri True Blue Women invites you to join us as we work on issues on the Missouri side of the state line.

We met July 21 and developed copy points for letters to the editor supporting progressive candidates for federal and state positions. Seven of us committed to writing letters this summer.

We are also watching to see if the two ballot initiatives - repeal of the Missouri Plan of selecting judges and repeal of the earnings tax - have garnered enough signatures to be on the November ballot. This process will be complete by August 3. If they obtain the needed signatures we will work with like-minded groups to defeat both.

There are plenty of issues of interest in Missouri and I hope many of our Missouri members will choose to get active on our committee. If you are interested, e-mail Judy Sherry.

Missouri True Blue Women is a committee under the umbrella of the main organization of True Blue Women. We formed it based on the requests we had from our Missouri members to have a group which would work on issues that are specific only to our side of the state line. We currently have 30 members and meet monthly.

Goals:

  • Generate at least one letter to the editor per month on one of our issues of concern.

  • Individual members will "own" their issues; research web sites; get on e-mail lists, etc. so our committee members (and all TBW members) can be kept informed.

  • Actively communicate with our legislators on the issues of concern; including prodding them to take actions on dormant issues which need action, such as advance voting.

  • Keep the Missouri TBW section on the TBW web site updated with topical articles.

Missouri Court Plan

The Missourians for open and accountable judicial selection are playing quite a shell game to conceal the source of a combined $400,000 in donations (April 24 - "Campaign maneuver lets donors stay secret; the look of 'laundering' funds via nonfprofits arises in a drive to have Missouri judges elected").

Someone (they will not reveal who) is spending large sums of money to dismantle the nonpartisan court plan of judicial selection in the name of "openness" and "accountability." This is not just ironic - it's dangerous.

If a person or group is willing to spend $400,000, let the rest of us know who that individual or organization is so we can see why anyone would think politicizing the judiciary is such a good idea.
