Spotlight: Vitamin Angels

Vitamins save lives. One third of all childhood deaths are caused by undernutrition, usually a result of poverty. Vitamin Angels is an organization out to change that.
Why vitamins? For young children, essential nutrients help build the foundation for good health and the opportunity to lead meaningful lives. Howard Schiffer, president and founder, says "Essential nutrients save lives." Schiffer, once a midwife, has been involved with nutrition for more than 30 years. "It is measurable, it is scalable and we don't need to spend a penny on research, or 10 years trying to find the cure. We only need to make the decision that these children are worth it."
Apparently, they are. Vitamin Angels have reached over 4,500,000 children in 27 countries.
The mission of Vitamin Angels is to mobilize and deploy private sector resources to advance availability, access and use of micronutrients, especially vitamin A, by newborns, infants and children in need. Vitamin Angels reduces child mortality worldwide by connecting essential nutrients with infants and children under five. Essential nutrients enable young immune systems to fight infectious diseases, helping children attain good health and the opportunity to lead meaningful and productive lives.
